Save the date for the annual HEAU Spring Conference set for March 9, 2012 at Noah’s of South Jordan. Join us for a full day of great presentations addressing our conference theme: “HEAU with 2020 Vision- Focusing on the Future”

We are currently building our conference agenda and are looking for exciting and knowledgable presenters to address topics applicable to Health Education as we progress toward the year 2020. If you are interested in presenting during a 50 minute session, please read the following information about submitting an abstract. The deadline for submissions is January 6, 2012.

Abstract Submission:

The Health Education Association of Utah invites both professionals and students to submit an abstract for presentation at the 2012 Spring Conference. We are particularly interested in receiving breakout session presentations on topics that demonstrate application of knowledge, skills and tools of the future or other areas that are of particular interest to HEAU students and professionals such as public health issues, collaboration strategies, program planning and research. Another important topic could be how the new National Prevention Strategy released this June will affect the future of our profession.(This is not a comprehensive list and all submissions will be carefully and fairly reviewed). Anyone with knowledge and experience in the health field is encouraged to submit an abstract for review.

Submission Deadline is January 6, 2012.

Theme: “HEAU with 2020 Vision- Focusing on the Future”

Oral Presentations:
- Professionals may submit an abstract to present during a 50 minute session
- Students may submit an abstract to be one of two-three oral presenters during a 50 minute session

Abstract Criteria:

· Session Description - Two to four sentences to be used in marketing materials to describe the session to participants

· Word Count - Abstracts may not exceed 300 words

· Learning Objectives – Three or more learning objectives must be listed

· Contact Information -Abstracts must include name, address, phone, and email of presenter

Abstracts will be reviewed using the following criteria:

· Topic is significant to Health Education

· Abstract is consistent with HEAU’s theme of “HEAU with 2020 Vision- A Focus on the Future”
· Learning objectives are clearly defined & relevant to conference participants

Abstracts may be submitted to Andrea Jensen, HEAU Program Committee Chair, via email, fax, or mail by January 6, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. Presenters will be notified via email by January 16, 2012.

Welcome HEAU Members to the new 2011-2012 year! The theme for this year is “HEAU with 2020 Vision. Whether you are a relatively new health educator, a seasoned professional or an aspiring student, professional development is a key component to performing your best. Changes in technology, research, policies, etc, are happening rapidly. How can we possibly keep up? One way is by becoming an active member of HEAU.

HEAU has always been the place to get professional development specifically for health educators. You can look for two opportunities to participate this year. The first will be our Fall Forum which will focus on current best-practices. The second will be the Spring Conference which will focus on the future. What will we need to know for the upcoming decade? What will the changes be? How will the changes affect our profession? Registration is now open for the HEAU Fall Forum held on November 10 from 8:30-12:00 noon at the Salt Lake City Main Library at 210 East and 400 South, SLC. Just an important reminder that parking at the SLC Library will cost $12 for the full conference.  We strongly encourage taking TRAX and/ or carpooling to share the cost if possible.

This year’s theme is “HEAU with 2020 Vision- Focusing on Best-Practices”. Keeping current through professional development is more important than ever as changes in funding issues make grants more competitive and new ideas evolve concerning how to motivate our program participants. Come hear the experts on grant writing, behavior motivation and more.

This year’s HEAU theme is “Collaborating to Advance Utah’s Health”. Collaboration is vital to health education because it is not the job of a single health educator to change the face of health education throughout Utah. We can accomplish more if we unite together to reach our goal of promoting healthy lifestyles and decreasing disease. As we approach a new year, I encourage you all to work together within your communities and develop partnerships to accelerate a positive impact on health.

HEAU is a growing organization and we hope to unite health educators across the state. HEAU is unique in that our membership is comprised of new health educators as well as seasoned professionals. It can be challenging to meet all the needs of our diverse membership base. We encourage your input and participation with HEAU and we look forward to a continued partnership for years to come. I appreciate your support and I am positive that 2011 will be a great year for health education.

While our country is still struggling to come out of the recession, many of our budgets are feeling the pinch. Several organizations have cut services and programming. Though we can’t always control the budgets that fund our programs, there are things we can do to maximize their effectiveness. This, in turn, will increase the likelihood that our evidence-based program will continue to receive needed funding. One thing we can do to improve the efficacy of our programs is to base them on theory.

Remember that class you took back in college where you learned about the Health Belief Model and Stages of Change? Those, and other theories, provide a scientifically measured base for behavior change. They help to explain human behavior and how to change it. Theory reminds us that human behavior is influenced by many factors.

Effective programming provides a multi-faceted approach to address those factors. Using the constructs of theory as a program base will increase the likelihood of program success. Program success will increase the odds of future funding and our ultimate goal, improving the health of our clients.

• Increase HEAU membership among professionals and students
• Maintain electronic media to disseminate health-related activities, information, and opportunities to all members
• Strengthen membership involvement in HEAU workshops, conferences, and activities
• Promote HEAU members’ awareness and involvement of current health-related legislative issues
• Implement a fundraising committee to enlarge financial situation and benefit from non-profit status
• Support and grow the mentor/mentee program
• Boost HEAU’s presence in the community through more community outreach activities
